Notes on the list of treatment cities for "The Local Labor Market Effect of Relaxing Internal-Migration Restrictions: Evidence from China " (Lei An, Yu Qin, Jing Wu, and Wei You, Journal of Labor Economics, 2024). The urban population data used in this paper is collected from the "China Urban Construction Statistics Yearbook", which provides urban area population (shi qu ren kou) statistics for each year. Because the Hukou reform was announced in July 2014 and the 2014 wave of the CMDS was conducted before July 2014, we define the years 2015, 2016, and 2017 as the post-period. Correspondingly, we use the 2014 urban area population (shi qu ren kou) data to categorize cities into five groups. Specifically, we define the cities with an urban population above 5 million as the control group and create four treatment dummies for another four city size categories (3 – 5 million, 1 – 3 million, 0.5 – 1 million, and <0.5 million). Based on the above rule, the only adjustment we made was the inclusion of Hangzhou in the control group. This adjustment stems from the fact that Hangzhou's urban area population hovered near 5 million in 2014 and surpassed this threshold in 2015. Furthermore, Hangzhou's household registration reform specifically stipulated measures to control population inflow. We also verified the estimation results without making this adjustment, and they were almost entirely consistent with the existing results in the paper.
